I can hear the bells...

A few months ago I announced my engagement in this blog, and now it is time to announce the next step – I’m getting married! And Soon!

At first we decided to have a June/July wedding in Morocco next year, giving time for family and friends to save up money if they wanted to come over. But the more we looked into it, the more it became clear that getting married in Morocco is no simple task. There is a lot of paperwork. It would virtually be impossible to get all of the paperwork finished AND have the wedding in my mid-year uni holidays. So we have decided to separate the 2 events. Step 1 – get married this year. Step 2 – have the big Moroccan wedding next year!

Of course, only if all goes well with the paperwork! I would not wish it upon my worst enemy to have to get married in Morocco. I have never been more stressed and confused in my life! First we had to get all our respective papers together. This included getting papers sent from Australia, 2 trips starting at 5am to go the capital city, multiple trips to the translators and a visit to the doctor. We then had to photocopy every one of our papers 7 times! We then submitted everything to the family court where they proceeded to tell me they didn’t think my Australian police check was the original. One thing you need to know about Morocco is that they love stamps. If it has a stamp on it, it must be official. Unfortunately, my police check did not have a stamp. I think they thought I had jumped on Microsoft word and typed it up myself! Anyways, lucky I had a certified copy of the original (with a stamp on it), so finally they accepted it. A 2 hour wait at the court yesterday, then we had to take our papers to the police where they will check it again for a few days, then back to the court. And then hopefully they will let us get married!!

This is tentatively taking place in 2 weeks time – the 22nd October. We will sign the marriage contract, exchange rings and enjoy good food, good tea and good music in a small ceremony. Hopefully my sister sophie will be able to make it down from England, and of course all of Karim’s family will be there and our close Moroccan friends. After all the stress of the last few months, it will be so good to put it behind us and start the next chapter of our lives as husband and wife! And then my new husband and I will go off on our long-awaited for honeymoon around Morocco!

So there you have it. In a few weeks time I will be a married woman! And I couldn’t be happier. Of course I wish you could all be there this year to celebrate, but I know the big Moroccan wedding next year will be worth the wait! More information and invites will be out soon, but if anyone is interested, you are more than welcome!
