July joy

July already! One month of summer down, 2 months to go. Its starting to get really hot now – the other day when I was walking to school the bank temperature display said it was 44 degrees. I’ve started having cold showers throughout the day – except the water in the pipes is so hot I have to wait for the water to run cold! The best part about summer is the summer fruit – nectarines, apricots, peaches, grapes, cherries and watermelon. And so cheap! Watermelon is down to 12c a kilo, and nectarines 36c a kilo! My next task i have set for myself as a housewife is making homemade watermelon sorbet, yum!

I have survived the second week of class, but it’s just getting harder and harder. There are lots of complicated rules and exceptions to learn, but i think the hardest part for me is the pronunciation – there are sounds that i don’t think i will ever be able to reproduce! But i am starting to understand a lot more words around me, and get excited every time it happens. My favourite words so far are: m’shmash (apricot), f’lfla (capsicum) and nifee (my nose), all very useful words in every day conversation! 4 more weeks of class to go and a lot more to learn!
Karim and I now have the house to ourselves again – Liv, Anje and Soph left a few days ago. Anje especially seemed to get into the Moroccan way of life – and in fact some people asked if he was Moroccan and started speaking to him in Arabic. It may have had something to do with the horrendous beard, but thankfully Karim’s brother Hicham (the hairdresser) got rid of that on day 2! Unfortunately both Liv and Sophie got sick in their short time here, but i guess it’s all part of the Moroccan experience! We hired a car one day to go up to the middle atlas and had a great day paddling in waterfalls and feeding peanuts to the Barbary monkeys (if Karim didn’t eat them first – the peanuts, not the monkeys.) Then we stopped at Marjane on the way home so Soph (a fellow supermarket worshipper) could enjoy the local offering. The rest of their time was spent exploring the medina with Karim and buying a carpet or 2! So now that Karim has met most of my family its time for him to come to Australia to meet my friends! Insh’allah.

Who is that moroccan man sitting in my living room?

  2. another great update from what sounds like a very happy Phoebe, and that is wonderful. I am sure that your class will one day soon, suddenly make sense. G & B> left this morning, after a hectic week, and we was Anj & Liv yesterday, so now i have this great record of those days with you.
